Behind the Scenes: The Ultimate Guide to Air Mattress in Water Photoshoot

Mattress photoshoots are so fun, but they can also be a little chaotic. I did one last year and finally wrote a little something to share my experience and tips. If you’re considering trying this whimsical shoot idea, here’s everything I learned to help you plan and execute it successfully.

Materials

  1. Air Mattress: Manually pumped is better to avoid water damage.

  2. Fitted Sheet: Any color works, but if it’s white, consider using two. Wet sheets can become see-through, so double layers help maintain a polished look.

  3. Throw Pillows and Blanket: Not required but highly recommended for a softer, cozier look. A crocheted throw or decorative pillow can elevate your aesthetic.

  4. Other Props: Keep it simple! The more props you add, the harder it is to balance everything. That said, small touches like a book or a bouquet of flowers can make your shoot pop.

Tips and Tricks for Mattress Photoshoots

The Mattress

  • Avoid a Tall Mattress: Using a mattress that’s too tall increases the likelihood of tipping over. A shorter mattress is much more stable, especially when dealing with waves or movement.

  • Use a Manual Air Mattress: Opt for an air mattress you can manually inflate. Electric ones need protection from water—I taped over mine to keep it safe. It worked, but manual is simpler and less risky.

  • Use a Rope for Stability: If you’re working in a river or anywhere with a current, tie a rope to the mattress under the bedsheet to keep it in place. This makes it easier to maneuver and prevents it from floating away.

A pondering: I didn’t try it but I guess you could use a normal pool inflatable - they’re generally the same thing and the way the air is distributed inside might be better. If you’ve tried a normal pool inflatable let me know!

The Location:

  • Be Careful with Waves: Shooting near actual waves adds unpredictability. Generally, calmer waters mean less tipping and more stability for your setup.

Final Thoughts:

Ultimately, the goal is to have fun and embrace the creativity of the shoot. Stay tuned—I’m planning to do this again with Manhattan in the background. Let’s see where this adventure takes us next!
